Talisman Sanchez

Post 44

I’m not sure how many people have noticed this, but Spurs remain undefeated with Davinson Sanchez in our side. We drew his first appearance when he came on as a substitute against Burnley. Since then, we are P10 W8 D2 L0 when he has started.

Put another way, our 3 defeats this season were Chelsea before he joined, the Carabao Cup to West Ham, and last week’s loss to Man United, for both of which he was rested. With him, we’ve beaten Everton, Dortmund, West Ham, Apoel, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Aged only 21, he’s made the transition from the Eredivisie to the Premier League remarkably quickly. For Spurs, he’s averaging 4.8 clearances, 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, and 0.5 blocked shots per match. Those are the stats. But more importantly, he’s simply looked calm, quick and solid in defence alongside Toby, Jan and Eric. He’s averaging 47 passes a game with 91% passing accuracy. Yes, he’s typically just recycled possession sideways to either Toby or Jan, but he’s done that effectively.

Signed for £42 million (£28m + £14m add-ons) until 2023, I suspect Davinson’s signing will turn out to have been another stroke of Levy-Poch genius.

Our defensive Talisman.
